Student Organizes for S'derot

From Rabbi Edward Harwitz, Head of School

Dear friends of JHSC:

I want to make you aware of an exceptional effort being made by Sophie Handler, a member of our larger Fairfield county community, to aid the citizens of S'derot in Israel.  I encourage you to read Sophie's powerful letter and support
"Strides 4 Sderot" through your participation and/or financial support.

Sophie's letter is as follows:

Dear friends,

I know that any one person can make a difference no matter how old they are and believe that it's everyone's responsibility to try to change the world for the better. Even though I do a lot of extra-curricular activities, the ones that mean the most to me are the ones that involve helping other youth. That's why  a walkathon called
Strides 4 S'derot means so much to me.  About three years ago I co-founded this walkathon and am now the co-chair of the event. I organize a youth committee, develop marketing materials, speak publically to promote the event, and of course, work out the details of the walkathon, itself.

One of my favorite times of year is when I go to sleep-away camp during the summer.  I wanted to share this experience with others, but at the same time help people in need. This is why the money that is raised at the walkathon goes to child victims of terror, and people living under threat of danger in S'derot, Israel. This is a city that for years was constantly being hit by rockets from the Gaza Strip.

Although it has been quieter in the region in recent months, the physical and emotional scars  of  living under years of terror remain. In order to help the child victims, we raise money to send them to sleep-away camps in other parts of Israel, out of harm's way, where hopefully they can experience some of the carefree days I'm lucky enough to have at my own camp. They also receive the therapies necessary to their recoveries from the traumas of their experiences.

Every year, I look forward to planning and participating in this event.  My family and I had the privilege of actually making a trip to S'derot, Israel in 2008,  a few months after the first walkathon. In S'derot, I had a chance to see first-hand the danger and difficulty the citizens go through daily.

While there, I went to the local police station where they had kept the shells of all of the rockets that had recently been fired from Gaza. I couldn't believe what I saw and I felt a lot closer to the situation. I saw the bus stops, now transformed into bomb shelters, on every corner. I also had a chance to have lunch with victims of rocket fire and I heard some of their stories. When I came home, it was time to begin the planning for the second annual walkathon. My experiences made it all even more meaningful and increased my desire to do more. I hope that the program will continue and grow for as many years as there is a need.

In just two weeks, on May 2nd, the 3rd annual Strides for S'derot Walkathon will take place.  I hope you will join me in helping these children. If you can be there, I would love to walk with you. If not, I hope you will consider supporting the cause. For more information, to register online or make a donation please go to  http://sites.google.com/a/cas-stamford.org/strides/ to participate or support Strides 4 Sderot.   100%  of every donation goes to onefamilyfund.org  , providing the camping and healing experiences for these children.

Sincerely,

Sophie Handler
