JHSC has been awarded the opportunity to participate in Re/Presenting the Jewish Past, a joint program of The Steinhardt School of Human Development, Education and Culture at New York University and RAVSAK: The Jewish Community Day School Network, with generous support from the AVICHAI Foundation.
In the next two years, JHSC will work in partnership with faculty from other high schools to re-envision the teaching of world and Jewish history and develop new curricular approaches and materials. As they engage in their own study of world and Jewish history, students at JHSC will be essential partners in an important, nationally recognized educational initiative.
Rabbi Todd Doctor, Assistant Head of School & Instructor of World and Jewish History states, "We are honored to have been chosen, among a select cohort of Jewish high schools throughout North America, to be part of and contributors to this innovative and important initiative. Like JHSC, Re/Presenting the Jewish Past believes the study of history is not merely an essential component to a well-rounded high school education, it offers tremendous value for students to contextualize their personal Jewish experience over time."
Joining with Rabbi Doctor in this endeavor are two distinguished educators from the Southern Connecticut Jewish Community: Rabbi Chagie Rubin of New Haven and Ms. Riki Weiderhorn of Westport.
In addition to JHSC, other participating schools have included the Gann Academy, Boston; Tannenbaum CHAT, Toronto; Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, Rockville, Maryland; and Yeshiva, Flatbush.
