Arts & Electives
A ROBUST CO-CURRICULAR ARTS & ELECTIVES PROGRAM:
Nurturing Creativity, Cultivating Aesthetic Vision, Encouraging Experimentation
JHSC offers elective courses in a number of academic areas as well as in the creative, fine and performing arts. JHSC works with many community partners to offer our students the most vibrant academic and artistic experiences.
For the 2010-2011 academic year, JHSC offers the following elective courses
Spanish Language & Literature: This course is taught with an emphasis on spoken and writt en Spanish. Course content includes different genres of Spanish literature and discussions regarding cultural influences from Spain, Portugal, Puerto Rico and Cuba. Class sessions also include exposure to Salsa and other elements of Hispanic music and dance.
Journalism and Creative Writing: Taught by Mr. Daniel Zeldin, member of the JHSC faculty and writer of short stories, this course highlights our students varied writing genres and styles to "connect" with readers from many communities. Through the journal HaKesher (The Connection), students write on a variety of subjects including: life and events at JHSC, world events, topics of personal interet and more.
Jazz & Rock Ensemble: Professor Brian Torff, a nationally recognized musician and member of the faculty at Fairfield University, serves as the lead teacher for the JHSC Jazz & Rock ensemble. This ensemble will provide the first joint venture between the Fairfield Theater Company and JHSC. Plans are underway for our first student ensemble at FTC in May. Painting & Drawing: Steven Gerber, a professional artist who serves as Professor of Visual Concepts and Rendering at New York School of Interior Design in Manhattan will teach Painting and Drawing at JHSC. Mr. Gerber is also on the Interior Design Faculty at Fairfield University and Manager and founding board member of City Lights, a non-profit arts center in Bridgeport.
